Welcome. I'm a husband, a father, an ordained minister, and a postmodern pilgrim. You can check out some of the projects I'm involved with below. In this space I mostly write about the intersections of Christianity and culture.

Steven - I really appreciate your perspective here. I don't really know much about Haiti's history. Jenell spent some time there a few years ago and came away with a deeply troubled sense of the inequalities inherent in their culture, some of which are imposed from outside but many of which certainly are internal. As far as gift and Haiti are concerned, I have no idea. My guess is the reall obstacle is what you describe as the "structural evils" which infect everything we do.

Thanks for the link to your article too.

haiti has been a part of my portfolio during my career in government, and as brandon pointed out, this being taken advantage of has been the problem for years in haiti...people forget that it wasn't that long ago that we actually invaded haiti (1994), and ever since they have had a UN peacekeeping force on the ground - minustah - and american corporations were invited in at-that-time (and before and after) to 'help', and yet coups and injustice and drug running and human trafficking have still abounded, with lots of people getting a cut of the profits. it's not like there are all bad people in those corporations or in haiti, it's something deeper, it's structural evils that exist institutionally, to which i know jason has sought to bring about a new paradigm of a gift economy understanding...i like what my friend dave diggs said: we don't need the bush-era doctrines of preemptive strikes and regime change, we need - especially on the america-side - some preemptive love and a regime change of the heart....

i actually have an article on the interconnectivity of injustice in haiti on the vineyard's justice response page: http://www.vineyardusa.org/site/content/action-steps-groups

i wonder how the culture in haiti might be receptive to the Kingdom/Gift Economics that you have talked about jason...?

Ah. The shock doctrine in practice (again). Although have they looked at the history of Haiti and our involvement? We are largely responsible for their economic predicament as it is...what with the debt repayments, CIA backed coups, corps looting the land...what else do they want to do?
