Welcome. I'm a husband, a father, an ordained minister, and a postmodern pilgrim. You can check out some of the projects I'm involved with below. In this space I mostly write about the intersections of Christianity and culture.

My brother Terry is an alcoholic. Has been most of his life. He comes from a long line of alcoholic's in our family. He believes if he just tries hard enough he can stop drinking. He can't. This kind of stuff has been happening to him his whole life, I could fill a large book with these stories concerning him. Because of an accident that happened when he was 15 killing his best friend by electrocution right in front of Terry, he has never been the same. He feels the accident was his fault and yes, he views God as a very scary God who is very angry with him. I think these things that happen to Terry is God reaching down trying to show Terry how much He loves him.

@Julie - Lol. Nicely put : )

@Lisa - I have no doubt Terry changed in some way that day, but he certainly didn't change dramatically. He didn't suddenly get sober, or cease to be a difficult person who makes unwise decisions. He continues to be relatively broken. But he also tries to make better decisions, I think. He is part of a church community these days, and obviously has a measure of faith. Maybe more than me.

Jeff and I have a friend who when he gets drunk, he can do math equations that would impress the socks off Einstein. Well, for at least someone intoxicated.

If your uncle really didn't give his friend your number - then yes - I would say a God thing. Even if he did give your number to the guy, God obviously could have still used that circumstance to try to reach Terry. The only unfortunate thing about your uncle believing it was a God thing is that he probably thought that God way of telling him that He was preparing a lighting bolt with his name engraved on it if Terry didn't straighten up instead of realizing how much God really loves him and just wants him to come home.
